Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Erlan Abdyldaev warned about the dangers posed by instability in neighbouring Afghanistan.

In fact, he described Afghanistan as the most serious external challenge to Central Asia and called for a more proactive international contribution in order to strengthen regional law enforcement and promote regional cooperation.

"Illegal drug trafficking appears as one of the key problems of the entire region as a direct consequence of the situation in Afghanistan," Abdyldaev told the high-level assembly at UN Headquarters. He also stressed the threats of terrorism and extremism emanating from Afghanistan.

The minister also said that these strong links undermine the achievements of Afghanistan's security and its ability to ensure law and order in Afghanistan, which is suffering from wars and conflicts over the past 13 years.

At the same time, Abdyldaev said a successful resolution of border issues in Central Asia benefits all regional states to the greatest extent and will enhance the regional transit potential, promote the cross-border infrastructure and improve the economic situation.

In related news, Afghanistan last week welcomed its first-ever peaceful power transition. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was sworn in as the country’s new president. In his first speech as the Afghan president, he pointed out that peace in his country is essential for the regional stability.
