The special monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Ukraine came under fire in the eastern Lugansk region, a military spokesman said Wednesday.
"A diversionary group attacked a vehicle of the OSCE international mission with small arms on the bridge over the Seversky Donets river," Andrei Lysenko, spokesman for the National Security and Defense Council told a press briefing.
The incident caused no casualties among the OSCE team, Lysenko said.
He added that the situation in the restive Lugansk and Donetsk regions remains "complicated," as independence-seeking insurgents "continue their provocative actions."
Meanwhile, the spokesman said that over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces suffered no fatalities, but eight soldiers were wounded in clashes with rebels.
Since Monday, there were no reports of civilian casualties in the two restive Ukrainian regions.
According to the latest UN estimate, over 3,500 people have been killed during the five-month-old conflict in eastern Ukraine.
To put an end to the bloodshed, Kiev and the rebels reached a cease-fire deal in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk earlier this month.
As an important step in the implementation of the cease-fire, both government troops and insurgents on Monday began withdrawing heavy artillery from the front line to create a 30-km weapon-free buffer zone.
