Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta voiced support to EU reforms in Serbia and greeted possible future infrastructure projects between the two countries that could improve their economic cooperation.

Ponta said on Thursday in an official visit to Serbian capital that "Romania will wholeheartedly support Serbia on its EU path without any conditioning."

"Serbia needs the EU but European Union also needs Serbia. It is in the interest of Romania that Serbia becomes an EU member as soon as possible," said Ponta after meeting his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic.

He said that the biggest obstacle to Serbian EU path is to fulfillment of all EU standards. He pledged that Romania will be "the best advocate for Serbia among the EU member countries."

Vucic said that Serbia has traditionally good relations with Romania, one of rare neighbors that Serbia never fought wars against or had problems with.

Vucic said that he talked with Ponta about ways to improve economic relations between the two countries by planning infrastructure projects together and investing in tourism along the Danube River that connects the two countries.

"During the summer there will be a meeting of ministers of traffic and infrastructure of Serbia and Romania and discuss ways to finance important infrastructure projects," he said, talking about the possibility to build a 160 long highway from Belgrade to Timisoara in Romania.

Vucic said that with his Romanian counterpart he also talked about the construction of the pan European gas pipeline that would bring oil from the Romanian port of Constanta on the Black Sea through Serbia and Croatia and finally to Trieste in Italy.

After the meeting, the prime ministers traveled together to the town of Bor in southeast Serbia to get a glimpse on the life of Romanian minority there.
