Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dačić will meet with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi on Tuesday in Brussels in the framework of the EU-facilitated dialogue.
The discussion will be led by the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and according to Serbian media it will revolve around the implementation of the agreement Serbia and Kosovo reached last month.
In April, Belgrade and Pristina concluded a historical agreement that will permit them to normalise relations and set a path towards European Union membership. According to the deal, facilitated by EU, the authorities in Pristina will assume power over the region of northern Kosovo, while 40,000 local Serbs would be granted with a degree of autonomy in the area.
Ashton’s spokesperson Maja Kocijancic told Serbian media that it is expected the talks to focus on concrete steps that need to be taken to implement the agreement as soon as possible.
Kocijancic also said that the agreement’s implementation is crucial for the continuation of the process of normalisation of the relations between Belgrade and Pristina and added that it is important also because of the requirements that the European Council placed before Serbia given its desire to start EU accession talks this year.
A day before the meeting today, the German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle visited Belgrade where he held talks with the Serbian authorities precisely on the implementation of the recently achieved agreement between Serbia and Kosovo. “An agreement on the implementation of the Brussels agreement and the start of its realisation is a key condition for Serbia's further progress on its European path," said Westerwelle in Belgrade on Sunday.
